On Display at DCH: March 21st-April 28th
Art Loop: Friday, April 14th
5:30PM-8PM
The Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators is back at DCH! This exhibition features original botanical illustrations of plants, trees, and flowers by regional artists from the Philadelphia Society of Botanical Illustrators. Each artist chose their subjects for their natural beauty and captured that beauty, while at the same time illustrating the plant scientifically. Frequently roots, bulbs, seeds, fruits and other features are included in botanical illustrations to provide a more complete record of the plant. The artists may also include the pollinators if it pertains to a significant step in the plant’s life cycle.
Also happening during opening night at 7:00 pm is a special unveiling of a donated painting by the artist Bayard Taylor Berndt (American 1908-1987).
About Bayard Taylor Berndt
Bayard Taylor Berndt was an active member of the Wilmington, Delaware community of artists following the age of illustrators studying under Howard Pyle. He was a student of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as well as the Wilmington Academy of Art, where he later became Director. Berndt's instructors at the Wilmington Academy included N.C. Wyeth, Gayle Hoskins, Thornton Oakley, and Frank Schoonover.
Berndt never felt a need to go outside the Brandywine region to paint. He ran a gallery, frame, art supply store full time and established Hardcastle Gallery as Wilmington's first art gallery, showcasing local artists.
