Garden description: We bought our house over 20 years ago and the bones of the garden were in place: especially in our back yard. We did not want to mow the front so we had it landscaped by Kern’s brothers but have since added to the basic design. The backyard had been landscaped by the previous owners but we have added a great deal since and have also removed some of the original plantings. Who are the gardeners: My husband and I do the gardening. My parents were avid gardeners and my mother was a charter member of a garden club in the town where I grew up. Richard’s mother loved to garden and introduced us to Spiderwort which we now have in several areas of the garden.
Why do you garden: We love being outside and enjoy being in the yard. It is great for the soul.
How has gardening impacted you during this time: It gets us outside and keeps us active. I believe fresh air and sun help keep us healthy.
What do you have in your garden? We love hostas, coneflowers, Heuchera, and hellebores. We grow rosemary, parsley, 4th of July tomatoes, sage, oregano, chives and Jalapenos We have a native magnolia in the front and a beloved Viburnum in the back yard. Another favorite is the Bougainvillea we brought back from Texas on a plane and the many tulips that fill our front yard in the spring.
Do you have any problems with disease or pests? If so, how are you dealing with this problem? We really haven’t had and real problems other that borers in a birch tree which we eventually had to take down.
